First look photos from “The Legend of Tarzan”

hq

Here it is, the moment all the fan-girls and boys have been waiting for, the first images of Alexander in the role of Tarzan. Thank you Warner Bros for this rather wonderful early Christmas present. As well as getting our first glimpse of Tarzan looking suitably hot and brooding, here’s a first image of him with his great love and wife, Jane (Margot Robbie).

Welcome back to the jungle, Tarzan.

Lots of action, adventure and apes are on tap for the next incarnation of the iconic Edgar Rice Burroughscharacter played by Alexander Skarsgård (True Blood) in The Legend of Tarzan (in theaters July 1). And for director David Yates, it was a way to return moviegoers to a wondrous Africa in a properly romantic way.

“They haven’t been there for an awfully long time,” says Yates, who directed the last four Harry Potterfilms.

Legend takes a different approach to Tarzan than Burroughs’ 1910s writings, the 1930sJohnny Weissmuller movies and other pop-culture adaptations that focused on the man being raised by simians and becoming lord of the jungle. Instead, the movie finds John Clayton III, Lord Greystoke, a decade removed from his home in the Congo and fully entrenched as a British gentleman in 1880s Victorian London, with his beloved wife Jane (Margot Robbie) by his side.

He’s left his African home behind — his early days are seen in flashbacks — but is constantly reminded of his earlier exploits and gets invited back as an emissary of Parliament. While hesitant at first, Tarzan eventually returns to the Congo, old friends as well as Jane are put in serious danger, and his latest cliff-jumping, vine-swinging story kicks off from there.

“It’s almost the opposite of the classic tale, where it’s about taming the beast,” says Skarsgård, 39. “This is about a man who’s holding back and slowly as you peel off the layers, he reverts back to a more animalistic state and lets that side of his personality out.”

The cast also features Djimon Hounsou as Chief Mbonga, Samuel L. Jackson as the real-life figure George Washington Williams and Christoph Waltz as the Belgian antagonist Captain Leon Rom. There’s a historical backdrop for the movie, says Yates: Belgium’s King Leopold II, originally thought of as a philanthropist, took the Congo as his own colony in the 1880s and was responsible for a mass genocide that killed millions.

Jane has always factored heavily into the Tarzan mythology, and Yates envisions Robbie as a 21st-century take on the character who’s “in no way a passive partner to Tarzan. She’s a really strong, assertive, beautifully knowledgeable, very sexy modern woman who can more than look after herself,” says the director.

“In a way, it’s a story of two human beings and how they save each other.”

Yates also found Skarsgård a perfect Tarzan for 2015. The filmmaker liked that he was born in Sweden but found a career in America, so “he has this wonderful quality of not quite belonging to one or the other.” Plus, there was a distinct grace and physicality to the 6-foot-4 actor.

“Tarzan needs muscles, but it’s more a leaner, longer, more vertical modern man than the square-jawed stereotype we’re used to,” Yates says.

To get in Tarzan shape, Skarsgård spent four months in an all-consuming training regimen before principal photography started. “I basically didn’t see my family or my friends,” he says, though he adds that the part “was definitely worth getting up at 4:30 in the morning.”

Skarsgård also partnered with choreographer Wayne McGregor to figure out the movements and posture of a guy who carries himself as an upper-crust Englishman yet ultimately re-embraces his wilder side when he returns to his Congo home.

“He works mostly with the best contemporary ballet dancers in the world, so it was quite unusual for him to work with somebody like me who can’t touch their toes,” Skarsgård quips.

Africa itself is a main character in the movie, according to Yates, who tapped Pottercollaborator Stuart Craig to design his Legend of Tarzan sets. To capture the jungle flavor, two hangars at an old English airplane factory were transformed into soundstages 200 yards long with real trees, vegetation, running water and mountainous areas. Green screen and CGI were used, as well as natural elements photographed in Gabon to add richness to the fully realized environment.

“A lot of movies, you have to go to the far reaches of the galaxy to find extraordinary beauty and amazing things,” Yates says. But, he adds, “they’re right here on the planet. They exist just a few thousand miles away.”

No Tarzan Loincloth Confirmed But…..

V

…………lots of “V”

Ok, so I’m not using this Tarzan update to post a large, gratuitous picture of Charlie and his world-beating “V”, because I’m a professional news updater and I don’t do things like that.

The Tarzan test-screener on IMDb has (inevitably) been questioned about Alexander’s state of undress in the movie. Personally I’m relieved about the loincloth as no man looks good in one of those, and I’m liking what I’m hearing about the rest of his unattire.

Alas, no loincloth as has already been stated.
But he does go shirtless , I mean, how can he not, he’s Tarzan. And his trousers are very…well put it this way, I reckon he had to wax for this role.

The first time his shirt comes off, his trousers are as low as they could get without them running afoul of the censors.
You know that “v” thing that super ripped guys get from the hips on down? Well Mr Skarsgård has it.

So something like this then…..

Feedback from “Tarzan” Test Screening

We’d pretty much given up on the chance of hearing anything of much interest from the “Tarzan” test -screenings that took place earlier in the year, but one of the lucky testers has finally come out on IMDb to share some details (subject of course to the gagging order they have to adhere it). Big thanks to @Tarzan2016July for finding this.

Below are direct quotes from the IMDb user:

It was quite humorous in parts and I definitely wasn’t expecting that. I mean, the villain’s plot is dastardly as can be, yet they still find a way to put humor into a film that touches on one of the most abominable regimes Africa has ever seen.

As you might expect, Jackson is excellent, Skarsgård (fearsome physique and all) is great, Honsou is appropriately intense and driven, Waltz is quality and Robbie is actually really decent.

The film doesn’t trample on existing lore but it does update it appropriately. As a black man, I’ve sometimes found “white savior” films to be difficult to watch. I’m happy to say that this is not that kind of movie. The Waziri (though I didn’t hear that word) have minds and martial capabilities of their own. Jane is actually a mentally and physically capable woman

The film isn’t perfect by any means, the villainous plot is a bit strange in parts, the villains over complicate things in classical style, and watching a grown man go “ook ook” is disconcerting. But the action is suitably hyperkinetic, the Mangani are very well realized and the “victory cry of the bull ape” is…suitably fearsome.

If you like adventure movies then I definitely think it’s worth a look. I’ve always found it hard to give films a numerical rating, but I would definitely pay to see it in the cinema if that means anything.

Alexander Interview With The Herald (Scotland)

023832

Here’s an in-depth interview Alexander gave to The Herald Scotland during the Edinburgh Film Festival. He talks about growing up in Stockholm and his military service. There’s also some more mentions of “Tarzan” (only 11 months to go now) which only gets us really, really excited as we still await our first glimpse of the Jungle King.

When he was 19 Alexander Skarsgard signed up for national service. He didn’t do it for a laugh. He didn’t do it because he’d always wanted to join the army. He didn’t do it because he wanted to fire a gun. He didn’t even do it because he wanted to react against his lefty bohemian upbringing as embodied in his actor dad Stellan Skarsgard.

He is clear on this when I suggest it might have been. “I don’t know about rebellion,” he tells me as we talk almost 20 years later. “I come from a family of anarchists and socialists and pacifists and I was never into guns myself. I wouldn’t say I did it to p*** off dad or anything.”

No, he says, it was something else. “I grew up in south Stockholm in a very urban environment and I wanted that challenge of doing something that was extreme. It’s physically and mentally quite challenging and I was really intrigued by that.”

Alexander Interview With HitFix

13

There is a nice HitFix interview with Alexander with mentions of “War On Everyone” and “Tarzan” as well as “The Diary of a Teenage Girl”.

I was lucky enough to see TDOATG at Sundance and it sort of stuck with me ever since which I guess is now almost seven months later.  How you got involved and what convinced you to take the part?

Well, I got involved not in the traditional way through my agent, it was actually my friend Jack McBrayer, a comedian that was on “30 Rock,” I don’t know if you know who that is…

Absolutely.

So, he’s a dear friend of mine and when I was back in L.A. we were neighbors.  He basically said, ‘My friend Marielle wrote this script, it’s her first feature and I think she’s really cool and really smart.  She wants you to read it.  Can I give it to you?’  And I said, ‘Sure.’  And I read it and I just fell in love with the script.  I thought it was such a unique story and I loved the character.  I saw it as a real interesting challenge to try to figure out how to play Monroe in a way that wasn’t too predatory — just kind of make him real and find some life in that.  And then I met Marielle and I was kind of blown away by her energy and her enthusiasm.  I mean this project has been her baby for almost a decade.  She adapted the comic book for the stage first and did a play off Broadway in New York where she played me Minnie herself and wrote the script.  It was a combination of that kind of just like being really just fallen in love with Marielle and her energy and feeling like this could be an interesting challenge to find a way of making Monroe layered and real.

Alexander Skarsgard Uproxx Interview

alexander-skarsgard1

Uproxx have released a really good new interview with Alexander in which he talks about Tarzan, as well as Eric Northman and “The Diary of a Teenage Girl”. Thanks to Skarsgard for posting the link.

Since becoming a famous person by playing Eric Northman on True Blood, Alexander Skarsgård has seemed to poo-poo the typical Hollywood offerings. There hasn’t been the role of playing Mark Wahlberg’s buddy in Contraband 2, or whatever. Sure, he did have a supporting part in Peter Berg’sBattleship, but it’s almost the exception that proves the rule… and if Skarsgård was going to make a failed huge studio movie, well, he picked the one. While his father, Stellan Skarsgård, has been making Marvel movies, Alexander has spent his time making movies with Lars von Trier, Zal Batmanglij, and now with Marielle Heller with The Diary of a Teenage Girl.

In The Diary of a Teenage Girl, Skarsgård plays Monroe, a character who should be repulsive, but the way Skarsgård plays him, it winds up being frustratingly confusing. Monroe seems like a nice guy, but it just so happens he’s sleeping with his girlfriend’s (Kristen Wiig) teenage daughter, Minnie (Bel Powley). Monroe knows this is wrong and tries to end the relationship, but is weak and can never seem to turn Minnie down. Monroe could have easily, and probably pretty effectively, been played as an “asshole,” but Skarsgård gives Monroe depth that Monroe might not even deserve.

Next year, Skarsgård will play the lead in the no-doubt-about-it big budget Tarzan. Directed by David Yates (who has four Harry Potter movies under his directing belt), this at least sounds like a much more interesting Tarzan than we’ve seen in awhile – a Tarzan that is fully domesticated, living in England with his wife. Ahead, Skarsgård explains what he’s looking for when he picks a role, and explains why his Tarzan probably isn’t what you’re expecting.

Alexander Skarsgard Interview With The Guardian

EIFF_10

The Guardian have just released a new interview with Alexander – From True Blood to Tarzan – How Alexander Skarsgard Swung Into Hollywood

I’m tall in Sweden,” says Alexander Skarsgård, lounging across a conveniently oversized sofa. “But I’m huge in Hollywood.” He’s not kidding: at 6ft 4in, he’s even taller in the flesh than he appears on screen. This must make film parties particularly awkward for people who find themselves pitching projects – or even just chatting – to his navel.

His height, in an industry full of titches, and his unmistakably Swedish looks, have helped Skarsgård stand out from the pack. He was perfect for a small turn in Zoolander as one of Ben Stiller’s buddies, and his imposing presence led to a breakout role in the vampire TV show True Blood. It also makes his turn in new movie The Diary of a Teenage Girl, in which his character has an affair with his girlfriend’s 17-year-old daughter (5ft 2in), even more shocking. The coming-of-age drama, which also stars Kristen Wiig and British newcomer Bel Powley, recently gained an 18 certificate in the UK for its explicit sex scenes, a decision its director has denounced.

“Tarzan” Gets Chicago & LA Test Screenings

tumblr_nivb5q71lz1qi6ht9o1_1280

Alexander Skarsgard’s highly anticipated 2016 movie “Tarzan The Untamed” is getting its first test screening for a lucky audience in Chicago on Saturday. Director David Yates has previously used the Chicago cinema-going public to test out his Harry Potter films (You may have heard of them?). He has also attended at least a couple of the screenings himself. This Tarzan screening is very early, but it may be that the director / producers have a few different ideas, and want to gage the audience reaction before the movie is completed. It’s not clear if those in attendance will be able to make any public comments afterwards, but hopefully we might get one or two juicy titbits.

UPDATE: There is also now a test screening in Los Angeles on Monday night.

Margot Robbie – More On Tarzan

download

Margot Robbie has been talking to elmundo.es about her Hollywood career, including a little bit about Tarzan and Alexander Skarsgard. The interview has been written up in Spanish, but our wonderful site owner Barbara has translated any mention of Tarzan  for us. And whilst we are obviously always searching for the intellectual content of each article we couldn’t help but notice that Margot admits she has  “never seen a body like his”.
