Robert Eggers, days away from the opening of The Lighthouse, is setting his sights on his next feature project.
Eggers is sticking to historical times with The Northman, a Viking drama that is being set up at New Regency.
Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman, Anya Taylor-Joy, Bill Skarsgård and Lighthouse star Willem Dafoe are in various stages of talks to star in the saga.
Lars Knudsen, who produced Eggers’ breakout The Witch, as well as Ari Aster’s Hereditary and Midsommar, is producing the project. Skarsgard is said to have approached Eggers with the initial idea for the story and will also be a producer.
Written by Eggers and Icelandic poet and novelist Sjón, Northman is described as a grounded story set in Iceland at the turn of the 10th century that centers on a Nordic prince who seeks revenge for the death of his father.
If talks progress and deals are made, Skarsgard would play the prince and Kidman would portray his mother. Keeping fingers crossed that all works out and Alex will be in this role! Funny how the film is titled The Northman. His character in True Blood was Eric Northman.

Uproxx have released a really good new interview with Alexander in which he talks about Tarzan, as well as Eric Northman and “The Diary of a Teenage Girl”. Thanks to Skarsgard for posting the link.
Since becoming a famous person by playing Eric Northman on True Blood, Alexander Skarsgård has seemed to poo-poo the typical Hollywood offerings. There hasn’t been the role of playing Mark Wahlberg’s buddy in Contraband 2, or whatever. Sure, he did have a supporting part in Peter Berg’sBattleship, but it’s almost the exception that proves the rule… and if Skarsgård was going to make a failed huge studio movie, well, he picked the one. While his father, Stellan Skarsgård, has been making Marvel movies, Alexander has spent his time making movies with Lars von Trier, Zal Batmanglij, and now with Marielle Heller with The Diary of a Teenage Girl.
In The Diary of a Teenage Girl, Skarsgård plays Monroe, a character who should be repulsive, but the way Skarsgård plays him, it winds up being frustratingly confusing. Monroe seems like a nice guy, but it just so happens he’s sleeping with his girlfriend’s (Kristen Wiig) teenage daughter, Minnie (Bel Powley). Monroe knows this is wrong and tries to end the relationship, but is weak and can never seem to turn Minnie down. Monroe could have easily, and probably pretty effectively, been played as an “asshole,” but Skarsgård gives Monroe depth that Monroe might not even deserve.
Next year, Skarsgård will play the lead in the no-doubt-about-it big budget Tarzan. Directed by David Yates (who has four Harry Potter movies under his directing belt), this at least sounds like a much more interesting Tarzan than we’ve seen in awhile – a Tarzan that is fully domesticated, living in England with his wife. Ahead, Skarsgård explains what he’s looking for when he picks a role, and explains why his Tarzan probably isn’t what you’re expecting.
Time for a quick update of some of our favorite True Blood actors.
Eric’s Vampire sibling, actress Lucy Griffiths, is to star in AMC’s pilot Preacher – based on the (very) graphic novel of the same name. We wish Lucy all the best with this, her True Blood character was sorely underused (more wasted potential from a show that ended up being renown for it).
Joe Manganiello has joined his fellow alumni Tara Buck, in the cast of Pee-Wee’s Big Holiday.
After a disappointing True Blood series finale that has already gained a place at the top of a couple of “Worst of 2014” lists, it’s good to see another Eric Northman moment make a “Best” list, (See our earlier post about Jason Stackhouse’s dream of Eric being the 2nd sexiest scene of the year), proving once again that the Viking Vampire was by far the best thing about True Blood’s final season.
One of our favorite reviewers, Meredith Woerner, has included an iconic Eric scene in her “Best” list, and we aren’t going to disagree with her (or Ginger).
It’s that time of year again when every man , woman and dog on the internet decides to give us their best and worst from the last 12 months of entertainment. And Alexander Skarsgard already features on a couple of the lists.
Firstly Eric Northman and Jason Stackhouse take 2nd place in Buzzfeed’s 29 Hottest TV Sex Scenes of 2014 for Jason’s dream of the Viking Vampire in True Blood 7.02. It wasn’t exactly the Stackhouse most of us had been hoping would get down and dirty with Eric in the show’s final season, but it certainly was one of the highlights from Bon Temps this year.
Here’s another short video, this time from ET in which Alexander Skarsgard, Anna Paquin and Rutina Wesley say goodbye to True Blood.
Season 7 of True Blood is released on DVD and Blu-ray in the US tomorrow (and in the UK today). Now fans of the Viking Vampire can take home and keep forever his final moments on the show. Also released is the entire 7 seasons box-set collection, for those who have been waiting until the end to look back over the lives and loves of the residents of Bon Temps.
The special features on the season 7 DVD box-set include A Farewell to Bon Temps, plus audio commentaries by members of the cast along with some of the show’s writers. (Unfortunately no commentary from Alexander Skarsgard).
The Season 7 Blue-ray also includes “True Death – the final days on set” (Witness the final days of the show through the eyes of the cast members as they document the experiences of their last days on set).
Vanity Fair have joined in the pre True Blood Blu-ray release promotion by posting a further short video from the final days of the show. This one shows some final wraps for the cast members, including Kristin Bauer Van Straten, Ryan Kwanten, and very briefly, Alexander Skarsgard.
As a huge Eric and Sookie shipper, and also a fan who is still in denial that Eric Northman won’t be returning next year, it broke my heart a little bit to see the final scene Alexander filmed was actually from the penultimate episode, one of Eric’s final moments with Sookie, before he flew her home over Bon Temps. If only this had been the very final scene and we never saw them again as they flew somewhere far, far away together…….
Nice touch to hear someone doing the Tarzan call, as Alexander was leaving the set early to begin his time as King of the Jungle for Warner Brothers in London.
EW have posted a short preview clip of one of the True Blood upcoming Blu-ray release extras titled “True Death: The Final Days on Set.”
The DVD and blu-ray for Season 7 and the entire 7 seasons box-set are available from November 11 in the US (and November 10 in the UK).
This short clip is entitled “Tricks of the trade”. It features Kristin Bauer Van Straten, Karolina Wydra, and (briefly) our man Alexander Skarsgard.
2 vampires and a fang-banger from True Blood got together yesterday at Stan Lee’s Comikaze event in California. Kristin Bauer van Straten, Tara Buck and Stephen Moyer answered questions submitted by fans and talked about how it feels now the show is over.
When asked the possibility of a True Blood movie, Stephen said that Alan Ball had been excited about the possibility “once upon a time”, the actors would love to work together again, but there doesn’t seem to have been any further developments, so unfortunately it looks like truebies probably shouldn’t hold their breath.
Tara Buck confirmed that Season 7 is her favorite “for obvious reasons”………..
