PaleyFest 2013 The Walking Dead Panel Photos

DSC_0142

PaleyFest 2013 openend last night at the Saban Theater with the cast of AMC”s “The Walking Dead”. It was a great night and a lot of fun to see a sneek peak of the episode that will air on Sunday 3/3/13. Chris Hardwick was an amazing moderator and asked the cast some great questions. I’m compiling the notes from the panel and will post here as soon as done.

Deadline.com has great coverage here for the panel:

EW.com posted the “10 things we learned from the cast last night”:

1. Character development will play a big role in Season Four.
“I think there may be a wee bit less of the run and gun. And [we'll] get a little more into some of our characters,” Executive Producer Greg Nicotero told EW. “The challenge with a show like this, when you have a big ensemble, is you don’t want any of the characters to get lost; it’s important that we know what Carol’s story is and that we know what Beth’s story is. And when you’re trying to service a lot of characters, it becomes challenging. Watching the first season of Walking Dead and seeing how grounded it was, that’s really important to all of us. Andy Lincoln and I spent a lot of time going through the scripts and making sure we feel that they’re grounded. Because that’s what keeps our audience coming back. The walkers and the gore and the action and stuff, that’s fun, that’s the popcorn part of it. But if you don’t have characters that people are invested in, you lose your audience.”

2. Rick’s descent into madness won’t last for long
Even though Carl doesn’t seem to think that he’s fit to lead anymore, Andrew Lincoln assured EW that Rick isn’t going to be this way forever. “I think you’ll see in the next episode a turning point happens and he realizes his responsibilities. And hopefully he’ll come back from the brink. But certainly since the death of Lori and the pressure imposed by The Governor, he is in a state of shock, grief, and stress, and he has had a breakdown. It’s tough times for Rick, but it’s always tough times for him, isn’t it? He never gets a day off, this guy.” Later in the panel, Lincoln came back to Carl’s criticism: “He has a point. I have been making some terrible calls. So, you know, bless him. Parenting in the apocalypse.”

3. Daryl could lead, but he’d probably rather not
Norman Reedus immediately deflected the idea that he’s become the fan favorite. “We all have our people,” he said. But when asked whether or not he thinks Daryl has the capacity to step up and lead the group, Reedus was much more assured. “I don’t think he wants to be the leader in any way. Like with Randall, remember Randall? There’s a whole episode about ‘what do we do with Randall’ and Daryl just kind of quietly went in there and beat the s— out of him and came back with bloody knuckles and was like ‘yeah, what’s up?’ He wasn’t like ‘look at me, look what I did!” I think if he had to lead, it would be reluctantly,” said Reedus. “He doesn’t want to talk about feelings or make you feel better about the future. He just does stuff. He gets it done.”

4. What Glenn really wants
Steven Yeun said in Glenn’s perfect world, “The Governor would be dead and he would be happy with Maggie in a field full of…food.” He said his world would be like a savory Willy Wonka factory. With steak trees.

5. Everyone is scared of Carl the child soldier
Lincoln said of Carl’s recent changes: “I see a boy turning into a soldier, which is a terrifying thing. And I think that that story between the group, the family, and this seemingly wayward boy turning into a child soldier is a terrifying and very interesting arc that we follow in the last five episodes.”

6. Andrea does not have feelings for The Governor anymore
Laurie Holden told EW: “I think she thinks The Governor is disgusting at this point. She didn’t sleep with him because she was having a weak moment. She slept with him because she had every intention of doing what Carol suggested. But it’s not easy to just slit someone’s throat when they’re sleeping. She doesn’t have all the information. She doesn’t know about Maggie, but at this point it doesn’t matter. He’s gross to her.” In the panel discussion, Hardwick referred to the almost murder as “Carol’s creepy vagina warfare,” causing Reedus and Lincoln to fall apart laughing.

7. Shipping Daryl and Carol
An audience member asked if we’re ever going to see them make out. Reedus said, “I like these two damaged people gravitating towards each other. It might happen…I don’t want to make the first move.” Reedus added, “I don’t think he has much game.” Given the shrieks that comment solicited, either he actually does have game, or he doesn’t and his female fans just don’t care.

8. Andrea and Michonne: not a cat fight
Holden told the audience that “Andrea and Michonne are two adult women who wanted different things. Andrea did not choose a guy over her. After eight months she wanted a life and she wanted a community. I think this one [Michonne] could have ended up anywhere and she would have been unhappy.” She added, “I think that she didn’t want to share Andrea with anybody. She was happy when it was just the two of them. And I wish that they really had been able to have a deeper conversation before Michonne left those gates.”

8. If Season Two ended with a hopeful cliffhanger…
“I would say [the Season Three finale] is the opposite of last year. In every way,” Holden said.

9. Season Four is underway
Executive Producer Gale Ann Hurd told EW that “the writer’s room has cooked up the first eight episodes, and they’ll probably start writing next week. And we start shooting May 6. We’re still finishing the season finale – editing and music.”

10. If you’re a fan, they’re listening to what you have to say
Comic creator and Executive Producer Robert Kirkman told EW, “we have the best fans in the world. If you go to the site, you see the message boards and can find out what they like and what they don’t like. We look at that, so we know sort of what fans want and what we don’t. They’ve given us a lot of interesting ideas. We’re ultimately going to do something that’s entirely unique and ours, but the fans are going to be very happy.” Sometimes the suggestions aren’t entirely helpful, but amusing nonetheless. Kirkman said, “we get a lot of requests for zombie animals.” EP David Alpert added, jokingly, “I’m not going to rule out seeing a zombie polar bear in Season Four. Because you never know.”

The gallery below are the photos I was able to get during the panel. enjoy!

It’s time to experience Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead in CMX-HD

July 3rd, 2012 – New York, NY – Skybound, The Walking Dead creator/writer Robert Kirkman’s imprint at Image Comics, and comiXology, the revolutionary digital comics platform, are thrilled to announce the release today of a newly updated 3.1 version of The Walking Dead iOS app available to fans everywhere. This new release includes major design improvements, accelerated speeds, and an ever-expanding library of CMX-HD ready The Walking Dead digital comics and trades to take advantage of the new iPad’s enhanced Retina Display.

The Eisner Award-wining The Walking Dead comic series was not only the #1 seller in graphic novels for 2011 — and is on track to retain the title again this year — but the top rated basic cable drama of all time during season two of the hit AMC television series. Kirkman serves as both writer and Executive Producer on the TV series.

“The comiXology-powered 3.1 interface takes The Walking Dead iOS app to a whole new level for fans of both the comic and the TV series,” says comiXology co-founder and CEO David Steinberger. “ComiXology is dedicated to delivering the best shopping and reading experience around and the upgrade to 3.1 — with CMX-HD capabilities and our revolutionary Guided View™ — hands down delivers to all Walking Dead fans around the world!”

The Walking Dead 3.1 iOS app’s smooth new design and interface not only enhances overall stability it also increases the usability beyond the original 2.0 functionality. New advancements in the UI enables a near instantaneous launch, dramatically cutting down on the app’s load times and allows fans of The Walking Dead to start reading faster than ever before.

In addition to the overall redesign, the app now exhibits enriched feature spotlights and CMX-HD — comiXology’s Hi-Def comic format —for users of the new iPad. “Purchases” now has its own tab so users can always find their The Walking Dead comics for quick and easy download without cluttering their “My Comics” area. The Walking Dead 3.1 iOS app brings the thrills and excitement of the comic series that inspired the hit TV show to a whole new level.

Fans will be happy to know that while a number of great new improvements have been made, The Walking Dead 3.1 iOS app continues to deliver the same quality comic reading and shopping experience customers have come to expect from comiXology powered apps. PaleyFest 2011 Guide For Fans Part 1

PaleyFest will soon be here! Seems like yesterday when they announced that True Blood will once again take part in the William Paley S. Paley Festival. (ok it wasn’t yesterday but actually announced on 12/15/10). True Blood fans may remember that the show was previously featured at PaleyFest in 2009. (4/13/09).

What is PaleyFest?

Named for William S. Paley, founder of both the Paley Center and CBS, the annual William S. Paley Television Festival celebrates television programming and the creative process behind the medium. The Festival has been held for the last 27 years. Paley Fest is a two-week event that features various television shows with different panel every evening. The panels include members of the show’s cast and creative team (producer, writers). The  line up of shows has been announced but as of this writing the actual cast and attendees have not been released. So far only the Walking Dead panel attendees has been released. For True Blood the only confirmed attendees are:
Sam Trammell
Kristin Bauer
Alexander Skarsgard
(he was the first one confirmed)

UPDATE 2/17/11 Just released: The following will also be attending:

Alan Ball

Anna Paquin

Stephen Moyer!

When is PaleyFest 2011?
Paley Fest 2011 is set for March 4-18, 2011 (The True Blood PaleyFest Panel is being held on Saturday March 5th)

Where will it be held?

All of the panels will be held at The Saban Theater in Beverly Hills, CA. Saban Theater website link here: The theater was formerly called “Wilshire Beverly Hills Theater” and it is located at:
8440 Wilshire Boulevard
Beverly Hills, CA

The seats are by section. There is no assigned seating (just a section is listed on the ticket). So this means that seating is on a first come first serve basis within seating area designated on the ticket.. Only premium ticket holdera are allowed in the “Pit” section closest to the stage. (there are only 44 seats in this section believe me well worth the price of the ticket!).

Here is the seating chart for The Saban Theater:

The seating capacity of the theater is a total of 1898 seats broken out below by sections. There will be Paley Volunteers to help fans get to their seats and figure out where they need to go if needed (plus also to keep fans from trying to sneak into a section not on the ticket they hold)

By section/Row#/number of seats:
Pit: rows AA-BB: 42 seats (rows 1 and 2) NOTE: These rows have been removed for Paley (to make room for the stage)
OrchestraFront: rows:CC-FF :120 seats(rows 3-6)
Orchestra:  rows GG-E:264 seats (rows 7-13)
Orchestra Rear: F-S :491 seats (rows 14-25)

Mezzanine AA-EE (overhangs orchestra row K) 197 Seats
Balcony Front: A-L 400 Seats
Balcony Rear: M-V: 384 seats

What will fans see at PaleyFest?
First let me state-Paley is not as insane as ComicCon. I spent over 12 hours in the same ballroom just to keep my seat in order to see the True Blood panel. (no assigned seating or areas at ComicCon and not super organized!).
Line ups for the 2009 True Blood panel I remember started very very early (some fans were on line by 9 am).
The Saban Theater is larger than the Arclight theater where PaleyFest 2009 was held  (The Saban  holds over 1800 seats double the ArcLight capacity) There will be large monitor behind the panel to help with viewing even if the seats are not close to the stage. Here is an image from PaleyFest 2010 that show the large screen behind the panel:

Panels start with an introduction from the panel moderator. Then there will be either a screening of the show or a highlight reel. For the 2009 True Blood panel, fans saw a snippet of Season 2 featuring Sookie and the first glimpse into the Maenad. After the screening, the moderator will ask the panel questions followed by a brief fan Q&A session.

Will fans be able to get autographs?

At the end of the panel, the cast/writers usually stay around for 10 minutes to sign items and or take photos with fans. There is no guarantee that they will stay at all to sign things but they have in the past. Make sure if you want an autograph-bring something for them to sign. (or you can have them sign your PaleyFest program they most likely won’t have time to personalize the autograph ) Decide who you want to have sign your item. You may ponly have time to get a couple of signatures.  Please DON”T RUN TO THE FRONT OF THE STAGE when the panel is over! Walk , be polite, don’t shove or push other fans just to worm your way up their. I know the opposite of this has already been posted on other sites but for everyone’s safety-Don’ RUN! I was stuck in a crush of fans in 2009 and it was definitely scary. I was seated in the second row center at the Arclight and was unable to get to the front of the stage. (I did not want to risk damage to my camera) I got the heck out of the way and went to the side and wound up with amazing photos of the cast signing autographs instead. You need to be polite and not super pushy or belligerent  when asking for autographs! If the security guards see any safety risks or issues for the attendees they will rush them off the stage. I found a cool online site that has an extensive selection of TV posters and cast photos. I would recommend a smaller sized poster ie the 11X17 size instead of a huge one. The smaller size is easier to travel with and may not get damaged dealing with the crowds. The Walking Dead posters and True Blood poster and cast photos are pretty cool. The image below has a link to their site:

The photo below is one of my favorite photos from that night. I was able to get some great shots of Alexander Skarsgard signing items for his fans. He was last one to leave the stage.

I hope this helps answer any questions you may have for PaleyFest 2011. If not please leave your question in the comments section and I’ll get an answer for it posted. Stay tuned for Part 2 of PaleyFest 2011 Guide where I will cover how to plan and make sure you can get some great photos at the event . Just a reminder–NO FLASH is allowed when taking photos during the event. Also NO VIDEO IS ALLOWED. Yes I know there will be tons of fans taping but taping is against Paley rules. Paley is a non-profit organization and they do tape the panels and release DVD’s for sale. The 2009 True Blood panel at PaleyFest was offered as a package with Season 2 DVD set sold at Target.
