Comic-Con 2012 Important Information Updates Lines Bag and ID Checks

Two weeks from today Comic Con 2012 opens with Preview Night. The long awaited convention is ALMOST HERE! I know I can’t wait to be there. Comic Con updated their site with some changes related to their rules on lining up/camping. For any that have been to Comic Con the lines are quite well known. Fans really wishing to get into a certain panel have been known to camp out for DAYS. Well that might change (well not much just now they will be regulated) What’s interesting has to do with the ‘no saving’ spots rule below.

Comic-Con International Line-Up Rules

While Comic-Con discourages any line-ups in advance at Plaza Park outside Hall H, if you do find yourself in line for an extended period of time, please adhere to these rules:

For safety issues we cannot allow anyone to line up in the Park until ALL tents, canopies, stanchions and work is completed at the Park. This also includes areas adjacent to the park, so please no waiting nearby for work to be completed. We anticipate that all work will be finished sometime Tuesday morning (July 10), however this is not a guarantee.

Because this is a safety issue, we have been told that anyone waiting in the area before all work is completed will be asked to leave regardless of time of arrival or length of time they have been waiting.

In an effort to accommodate as many people as possible with the least amount of impact for all, please follow the rules below:

  • Camping is not allowed.
  • No tents, canopies, inflatables, cots, beds, furniture, large coolers, heaters, large fans, large umbrellas, chaise lounges, open flames, or anything of similar size of any kind as determined by the Convention Center.
  • You are allowed to have one chair per person of relatively normal size. You may use a sleeping bag or blanket as well, provided it is only taking up the space of one person.
  • No facilities or services will be available in the Park, so plan accordingly.
  • Restroom access will be available in Lobby G of the Convention Center from 9:00 PM to 7:00 AM each night starting Tuesday, July 10. No other access to facilities will be available.
  • Please respect the grounds and dispose of trash in trash receptacles. Please do not leave any trash or waste behind.
  • No “saving” a spot in line unless it is only temporary, such as a restroom break.

SOURCE: Comic-Con 2012 :: Important Information.

The program schedule will be officially released by Comic Con shortly. Expect to see the Wednesday/Thursday schedule on the Comic Con website tomorrow. They will release the Friday schedule on Friday, etc. Waiting for the Con has sucked but it is almost here!

Expect to see very LONG LINES for Hall H programs. The final Twilight movie “Breaking Dawn” part 2 will hold the first panel on Thursday in Hall H. Twilight fans last year started lining up on the Sunday before the Con opened. It sounds like they won’t be allowed to line up until all of the preparations have been completed by Comic Con. Hall H holds 6500 seats for fans yes that’s a lot but it is not enough for some shows. Game of Thrones will be in Hall H on Friday July 13, 2012. True Blood will be in the smaller venue Ballroom 20 on Saturday 7/14/12.

A prelim listing of the program of panels announced so far is on this link. I am still updating the  list.

UPDATE: Comic Con posted the first part of the exhibitor map:

Paul Rubens will receive this award for his groundbreaking work as “Pee-Wee-Herman”.  Additional talent was also listed as being in attendance for the award show taping this upcoming Saturday 10/15/11. The show will air on 10/18/11. Skarsgardfans admin will be on the red carpet to cover the awards show. I’ll try to also do live “tweets” and blogging during the taping. So far no confirmation if there will be any other True Blood cast members present other than Joe Manganiello. As soon as I hear of any others I’ll post on this site.

Here is the Spike TV press release:

[box] SPIKE TV’S “SCREAM AWARDS 2011” NAMES SCREEN LEGEND PAUL REUBENS AS ITS “VISIONARY AWARD” RECIPIENT FOR HIS GROUNDBREAKING WORK AS “PEE-WEE HERMAN”

Quentin Tarantino, Mark Wahlberg, Bradley Cooper, Kate Beckinsale, Zoe Saldana and Lena Headey Also Set to Appear At Two-Hour Event Which Premieres Tuesday, October 18 At 9:00 PM, ET/PT On Spike TV, With Simulcast On VH1 and VH1 Classic

This Saturday night in Los Angeles, Spike TV will honor the man responsible for one of the most iconic characters of all time, as Paul Reubens will receive the Visionary Award for his work as Pee-wee Herman over the past three decades at “SCREAM Awards 2011.” The two-hour event premieres on Spike TV on Tuesday, October 18 (9:00 – 11:00 PM, ET/PT) and will be simulcast on VH1 and VH1 Classic. Reubens joins an illustrious list of past “SCREAM Awards” honorees, which includes Johnny Depp, Harrison Ford, Keith Richards, George Lucas, Tim Burton, Quentin Tarantino, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Christopher Nolan and Robert Downey Jr., among others. Reubens will be honored for the multitude of ways he entertained audiences as Pee-wee Herman since his introduction of the character in 1978. From the 22-time Emmy® Award winning “Pee-wee’s Playhouse,” to the lengths Herman went to be reunited with his bicycle in “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure,” to the “The Pee-wee Herman Show” on Broadway,

Reubens exhibited one of a kind creativity and groundbreaking originality and has had an extraordinary impact on generations of fans. Said Reubens on his receiving the honor, “If Pee-wee were giving this quote, I think he’d scream out ‘I’m a visionary! I’m a visionary!’ and then run to the dictionary to look up what visionary means. But I know what it means, and I am profoundly grateful and honored to Spike TV for this recognition. I share this with all the amazing collaborators I’ve had over the years and my fans, without whom none of this would be possible or worth it.” “Paul Reubens had a big vision and in bringing Pee-wee Herman and his amazing Playhouse to life, he brilliantly brought us all along on a very big adventure,” said Michael Levitt, executive producer of Spike TV’s “SCREAM Awards 2011.”

“Pee-wee speaks to the inner child in all of us, with a grown-up wit and a timeless irreverence. At the ‘Scream Awards,’ we honor a wide range of visionary geniuses and it has been a longstanding dream to have this chance to honor Paul – and Pee-wee – with the Scream Visionary Award.”

The show will also feature visionary director of “Pulp Fiction,” “Kill Bill” and “Inglorious Basterds,” Quentin Tarantino, Academy and Emmy Award nominee and star of “The Fighter” Mark Wahlberg, “The Hangover’s” Bradley Cooper, “Underworld” and “Van Helsing” star Kate Beckinsale and Lena Headey, star of “Game of Thrones,” who joins castmate Sean Bean at “SCREAM Awards 2011.”

These names are in addition to the already confirmed list of talent that includes two-time Academy Award nominee Robert Downey Jr., Academy Award winner Nicolas Cage, “Black Swan” director Darren Aronofsky, “Lost” creator J.J. Abrams, star of “Kick Ass” and “Let Me In” Chloe Grace Moretz, Kal Penn and John Cho of “Harold and Kumar” fame, “True Blood” star Joe Manganiello, “American Horror Story” lead actor Dylan McDermott, “Dr. Who’s” Matt Smith, “Fringe” star Anna Torv and “Death Valley” cast members Bryce Johnson and Caity Lotz, with more talent to be announced. Fans can vote, as well as view exclusive red carpet and backstage coverage of the event, by visiting scream.spike.com.[/box]

Atlantic Review: Where Game of Thrones Succeeds vs True Blood

After a summer when HBO garnered critical acclaim and new audiences with its epic fantasy series Game of Thrones, it’s been fascinating to watch True Blood, the show that introduced HBO to the genre, go dramatically off the rails in its fourth season. Both shows face the challenges of mustering very large casts in the service of complex storylines that are not always obviously related to each other, along with detailed magical mythologies and histories. But while Game of Thrones hewed closely to the original plotlines and pacing in George R.R. Martin’s book, Alan Ball and his writing staff have diverged wildly from Charlaine Harris’s Southern Vampire mysteries as they’ve moved deeper into True Blood. Taken together, the two shows represent the perils and opportunities of adapting an existing fantasy franchise.

Harris’s Southern Vampire books may be fairly conventional paranormal romances, lacking some of the higher-level philosophical and mythological resonances Alan Ball’s added to the franchise. But they’re an impressive example of world-building and pacing. Harris started out with vampires and shape-shifters, giving readers a grounded sense of those concepts and mythologies before adding werewolf hierarchies in the third book, witches in the fourth, and faeries in the eighth. That pacing gave readers time to get a full sense of how different kinds of magic work before introducing new part of the world and explaining how different concepts interacted.

By contrast, the show’s moved faster, introducing both witches and the idea that Sookie has faerie powers this season. As a result, both concepts and characters have suffered. When Sookie miraculously cured Eric of his witchcraft-induced amnesia with faerie abilities she hasn’t bothered to explore and that haven’t been mentioned since the first episode of the season, it felt lazy, not exciting—a plot device swooping in when it was convenient rather than after it had been earned.
