Charlaine Harris Interview SciFi Now UK

SciFi Now UK spoke with Charlaine Harris and the interview and page scans are in the gallery below. She speaks a bit about the end of the Sookie Stackhouse series. Dead Ever After is due out May 2013 and will be the final installment in the series. She also speaks of the faux pas committed by Alan Ball during a press conference. She had confided in him that she was contemplating having the character of Bill Compton die in an upcoming book (book 9). Well good old Alan Ball let that one slip at Paley Fest 2009. The way he said it was just unbelievable. It mislead fans a bit. So glad she finally said something about this!!

Review for Deadlocked Angst Rattle and Roll

The newest installment for Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse series titled “Deadlocked” is due out tomorrow 5/1/12. Luckily I was able to receive an advance review copy of the book from the publisher. It has been my pleasure to read this book a few times to allow all the action to ‘sink in’.  It also  helped me understand some of the subtle hints Charlaine has left in the book.

Book Description:

It’s vampire politics as usual around the town of Bon Temps, but never before have they hit so close to Sookie’s heart…

Growing up with telepathic abilities, Sookie Stackhouse realized early on there were things she’d rather not know. And now that she’s an adult, she also realizes that some things she knows about, she’d rather not see—like Eric Northman feeding off another woman. A younger one.

There’s a thing or two she’d like to say about that, but she has to keep quiet—Felipe de Castro, the Vampire King of Louisiana (and Arkansas and Nevada), is in town. It’s the worst possible time for a human body to show up in Eric’s front yard—especially the body of the woman whose blood he just drank.

Now, it’s up to Sookie and Bill, the official Area Five investigator, to solve the murder. Sookie thinks that, at least this time, the dead girl’s fate has nothing to do with her. But she is wrong. She has an enemy, one far more devious than she would ever suspect, who’s set out to make Sookie’s world come crashing down.

Review (already I know…hurry up!)

Yes I know you have all read the description and seen the different synopsis and yes even the many spoilers online for this book. We are so very close to the end of this series that it would be a big injustice to just spoil it all in here. You HAVE to read this book. There is so much in this one that needed to happen in order for the end to happen. There are story lines from the past that yes do come up in this one and do have closure. Many of the faces from the past do make an appearance in this book. Some fleeting some not so much.

Once again Charlaine Harris draws fans into the world of Sookie Stackhouse. In this twelfth installment we once again find Sookie at the center of another mystery, this time involving the murder of that young woman. She faces so many obstacles once again some of her own doing mind you and that is why I have grown to love this strong woman. The obstacles are not just ones in her own life but also the ones involving those she loves.

Many questions are raised in the unraveling of the mystery. Seems that for every step closer to finding out who caused the death even more questions come up. Sookie does also face many changes in her life involving family and friends. She is maturing. When we first met her in the series she was an innocent in many ways. Her involvement with supes and vampires have brought her many experiences some great, some bad. Through it all she has grown into a strong kick arse young woman that she needs to be in order to survive.

Vampire Pam sends a message to Sookie in the beginning of the book “Tell Sookie that this is the hard time that will show what she is made of.” This message is not just for Sookie but also for fans of this series. This book is filled with angst and yes many obstacles for Sookie and the vampire she truly loves. Many times in the book they both say the I love you’s. Still some fans will question that love. Real love is not simple, easy or wrapped in a bow. This is not a fairy tale (even though there are fairies in the book).

With only one more book in the series the huge question of “who will be the ONE” with Sookie in the end is one on many fans minds. This book brings closure to some of the past suitors. In Deadlocked we see some of these past loves and the questions of what if are put to rest in my mind for Sookie.  Sookie has grown not just in age (she celebrates her 28th birthday in this installment so we have seen 2 years of her life in the 12 books) but also in her emotional life. Her heart has faced love, loss, betrayal and yet she strives to continue to grow and learn to love and face whatever life throws at her. She starts to see life with her eyes (and her heart) open. (and sometimes does not really like what she sees)

Believe me in this book she is thrown a LOT to deal with. She has faced torture, evil acts in the past and in this book she must face yet another betrayal. She starts to question her very core. Along with all going on in her life the vampire politics also must be managed. Having a visit from the King in his area and also being a suspect in the murder of his blood donor keeps Eric quite busy. King Felipe De Castro is one vampire that I do not trust at all. I fear he has bad intentions for the vampire sheriff. The last book will hopefully answer some of my questions pertaining to the King.

Deadlocked is filled with many moments that will leave the reader filled with angst. That feeling of anxiety that just won’t go away no matter how much you wish the emotion were not there. However without that emotion, the action and inevitable end to the series will feel empty. The more to the depth of the emotions and how many times we feel for the characters are what make this an amazing series.

Yes Sookie’s world is rattled in this book. Yet I do feel she will continue to roll with the punches and continue to fight for what she loves. Her family , friends and yes the man she loves are what make her world go around. This universe that Charlaine has opened up to her readers continues to draw me in as a fan. I know when the last book is finally out I will devour every single word much like I did with Deadlocked.

Deadlocked did not race by at a frantic pace as in prior installments. Charlaine balanced the many plotlines that needed to be told and brought many of the questions to a close in this book. Yes she does leave us waiting for MORE at the end of Deadlocked. As in the prior books, the end will leave readers on the edge of their seat (if not on the floor after falling off their chairs). Did I like Deadlocked? No I LOVED IT. Again it’s not the happily ever after fairy tale type book. It is a well composed, kept at a manageable pace that kept me with my head buried in it until I finished it in a few hours. So yes I do hope fans will also enjoy the book as much as I did.

Waiting for the last book “Dead Ever After” will seem like an eternity now for me and fellow fans of the series. Again a huge thanks to the publisher for having the honor of an advance copy. Would love to hear from other fans once they have read their copy.

Deadlocked Additional Sneek Peeks

Can’t wait to read the next Charlaine Harris book “Deadlocked”? Well the rest of chapter 2 that was previously posted is on Gollancz.co.uk website. LINK HERE. In addition to chapter 2 they also have the full text of chapter one! Chapter one here:

Here’s a small snippet of chapter 2:

[box] Though it was good to see Halleigh, when I got back into the car with my stamps I was feeling a little blue. I turned the key in the ignition, but I didn’t put the car in reverse.

I knew I was a lucky woman in many respects. But there was life being created all around me, and I wasn’t …

I shut down that line of thought with a sharp command to myself I would not start down the self-pity path. Just because I wasn’t pregnant and wasn’t married to someone who could make me that way, that was no reason to feel like an island in the stream. I shook myself briskly and set off to complete the rest of my errands. When I caught a glimpse of Faye de Leon coming out of Grabbit Kwik, my attitude adjusted. Faye had been pregnant six times, and she was around my age. She’d told Maxine Fortenberry that she hadn’t wanted the last three. But her husband loved to see her pregnant, and he loved kids, and Faye allowed herself to be used “like a puppy mill,” as Maxine put it.

Yes, attitude adjustment, indeed.

I had my evening meal and watched television and read one of my new library books that night, and I felt just fine, all by myself, every time I thought about Faye.[/box]

The book will be released on 5/1/2012. Can’t post the review yet but I am looking forward to discussing the book with the fans!

Sookie Stackhouse Deadlocked Book Synopsis

Amazon UK released a synopsis for the upcoming Charlaine Harris book “Deadlocked”.

[box] Sookie has a murder investigation on her hands. A young girl has died at a vampire party – and it looks as though her lover, Eric, might be responsible. Eric swears he didn’t do it, the police don’t believe him, and even Sookie isn’t so sure. Nor is she inclined to take his word for it, not having caught him enjoying the victim’s blood minutes before she was killed. But something strange is going on. Why had Sookie been asked to come to the fateful party a few minutes early – just to catch Eric in the act? And why had the victim spiked her blood before approaching Eric? Was it simply because she wanted to be irresistible, or was it something more sinister? Sookie will have to find out . . . but it’s the worst moment to investigate, as her Fae family are having troubles of their own and Sookie is, inevitably, drawn in. And there is one last complication. The cluviel dor her grandmother left her. It will grant her one wish, which could fulfil Sookie’s heart’s desire. The only problem is, she still doesn’t know what – or who – her heart truly desires . . .[/box]
So what do you think fans? More trouble ahead for Eric Northman? Once again Sookie is out to solve another mystery. The book is due out 5/1/12. Waiting sucks!

How far into the thirteenth Stackhouse novel are you?
Zero! [Laughs.] That’s my next project. When I get home I have to go over the copy-edited pages of Sookie 12, which will be out in May. That will freshen up my memory about what I need to do in Sookie 13, to tie everything together. A seemingly impossible task.
