The newest installment for Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse series titled “Deadlocked” is due out tomorrow 5/1/12. Luckily I was able to receive an advance review copy of the book from the publisher. It has been my pleasure to read this book a few times to allow all the action to ‘sink in’. It also helped me understand some of the subtle hints Charlaine has left in the book.
It’s vampire politics as usual around the town of Bon Temps, but never before have they hit so close to Sookie’s heart…
Growing up with telepathic abilities, Sookie Stackhouse realized early on there were things she’d rather not know. And now that she’s an adult, she also realizes that some things she knows about, she’d rather not see—like Eric Northman feeding off another woman. A younger one.
There’s a thing or two she’d like to say about that, but she has to keep quiet—Felipe de Castro, the Vampire King of Louisiana (and Arkansas and Nevada), is in town. It’s the worst possible time for a human body to show up in Eric’s front yard—especially the body of the woman whose blood he just drank.
Now, it’s up to Sookie and Bill, the official Area Five investigator, to solve the murder. Sookie thinks that, at least this time, the dead girl’s fate has nothing to do with her. But she is wrong. She has an enemy, one far more devious than she would ever suspect, who’s set out to make Sookie’s world come crashing down.
Review (already I know…hurry up!)
Yes I know you have all read the description and seen the different synopsis and yes even the many spoilers online for this book. We are so very close to the end of this series that it would be a big injustice to just spoil it all in here. You HAVE to read this book. There is so much in this one that needed to happen in order for the end to happen. There are story lines from the past that yes do come up in this one and do have closure. Many of the faces from the past do make an appearance in this book. Some fleeting some not so much.
Once again Charlaine Harris draws fans into the world of Sookie Stackhouse. In this twelfth installment we once again find Sookie at the center of another mystery, this time involving the murder of that young woman. She faces so many obstacles once again some of her own doing mind you and that is why I have grown to love this strong woman. The obstacles are not just ones in her own life but also the ones involving those she loves.
Many questions are raised in the unraveling of the mystery. Seems that for every step closer to finding out who caused the death even more questions come up. Sookie does also face many changes in her life involving family and friends. She is maturing. When we first met her in the series she was an innocent in many ways. Her involvement with supes and vampires have brought her many experiences some great, some bad. Through it all she has grown into a strong kick arse young woman that she needs to be in order to survive.
Vampire Pam sends a message to Sookie in the beginning of the book “Tell Sookie that this is the hard time that will show what she is made of.” This message is not just for Sookie but also for fans of this series. This book is filled with angst and yes many obstacles for Sookie and the vampire she truly loves. Many times in the book they both say the I love you’s. Still some fans will question that love. Real love is not simple, easy or wrapped in a bow. This is not a fairy tale (even though there are fairies in the book).
With only one more book in the series the huge question of “who will be the ONE” with Sookie in the end is one on many fans minds. This book brings closure to some of the past suitors. In Deadlocked we see some of these past loves and the questions of what if are put to rest in my mind for Sookie. Sookie has grown not just in age (she celebrates her 28th birthday in this installment so we have seen 2 years of her life in the 12 books) but also in her emotional life. Her heart has faced love, loss, betrayal and yet she strives to continue to grow and learn to love and face whatever life throws at her. She starts to see life with her eyes (and her heart) open. (and sometimes does not really like what she sees)
Believe me in this book she is thrown a LOT to deal with. She has faced torture, evil acts in the past and in this book she must face yet another betrayal. She starts to question her very core. Along with all going on in her life the vampire politics also must be managed. Having a visit from the King in his area and also being a suspect in the murder of his blood donor keeps Eric quite busy. King Felipe De Castro is one vampire that I do not trust at all. I fear he has bad intentions for the vampire sheriff. The last book will hopefully answer some of my questions pertaining to the King.
Deadlocked is filled with many moments that will leave the reader filled with angst. That feeling of anxiety that just won’t go away no matter how much you wish the emotion were not there. However without that emotion, the action and inevitable end to the series will feel empty. The more to the depth of the emotions and how many times we feel for the characters are what make this an amazing series.
Yes Sookie’s world is rattled in this book. Yet I do feel she will continue to roll with the punches and continue to fight for what she loves. Her family , friends and yes the man she loves are what make her world go around. This universe that Charlaine has opened up to her readers continues to draw me in as a fan. I know when the last book is finally out I will devour every single word much like I did with Deadlocked.
Deadlocked did not race by at a frantic pace as in prior installments. Charlaine balanced the many plotlines that needed to be told and brought many of the questions to a close in this book. Yes she does leave us waiting for MORE at the end of Deadlocked. As in the prior books, the end will leave readers on the edge of their seat (if not on the floor after falling off their chairs). Did I like Deadlocked? No I LOVED IT. Again it’s not the happily ever after fairy tale type book. It is a well composed, kept at a manageable pace that kept me with my head buried in it until I finished it in a few hours. So yes I do hope fans will also enjoy the book as much as I did.
Waiting for the last book “Dead Ever After” will seem like an eternity now for me and fellow fans of the series. Again a huge thanks to the publisher for having the honor of an advance copy. Would love to hear from other fans once they have read their copy.
