Alexander on his morally complex role in “Diary”

news.com.au have released an interview with Alexander in which he talks about his morally complex role in The Diary of a Teenage Girl and his first crush at the age of  8 or 9.

He admits it’s confronting, but Alexander Skarsgard doesn’t want you to see his latest character — a man who has an affair with a 15-year-old — as a bad guy.

The Swedish actor who made his name in the vampire series True Blood, will next be seen in The Diary of a Teenage Girl, where he plays a 35-year-old who has a relationship with his girlfriend’s daughter.

While it’s a controversial topic, Skarsgard told news.com.au he hopes the audience feel empathy for his character.

“Without condoning what he does, I thought it would be an interesting challenge to play. The audience is supposed to feel uncomfortable with it. If you just felt that he’s preying on her, it wouldn’t be interesting for more than one or two scenes. If you think he’s a villain, it’s too easy.

“It’s more interesting if you think he’s a good guy but then you think, ‘Oh, but sh*t; now he does this. I don’t know how I feel about him anymore’.”

No stranger to sexually charged roles, the 39-year-old believes sometimes the nature of the story requires actors to push their boundaries.

“I’ve done a few sex scenes, including sex scenes with men, but if you’re excited about the storytelling and you know how it fits in, it really doesn’t bother me.”

Skarsgard recalls his own first sexual stirrings. “It’s quite an innocent story. I remember watching the film, Tootsie. I was eight or nine-years-old and when Jessica Lange showed up on screen I felt something really weird and I couldn’t figure it out. I had never felt an attraction before.” He laughs. “I was mesmerised and I thought, ‘What is this? Why am I so drawn to this girl and why do I want to keep watching her?’ When I re-watched it a couple of years ago, I was like, ‘Oh, that makes sense’. I had pretty good taste back then,” he smiles. “I’ve never met her, unfortunately, but I still have a crush on her.”

Skarsgard may be an old hand when it comes to sexual scenarios and nude scenes, though his leading lady with whom he shares these controversial scenes is unknown British actress, Bel Powley, 23 (who filmed the movie at age 21).

Skarsgard’s on screen hard-partying girlfriend is played by Kristen Wiig, an unusual role for the beloved comedy icon. “I’d mostly seen her in comedies but I was confident she was going to be a great dramatic actress and she did a fantastic job.”

A ‘virgin’ in many respects, this role marks her Hollywood debut. He explains, “If you ask Bel, we were all very comfortable with each other. It was a small crew on those days of shooting and really, there was so much love in that room that it made the nude scenes much easier to play.”

Powley concurred. “Alex was my first on screen kiss, as well as everything else, but he’s done countless sex scenes so I felt that I was in good hands with him. He knew exactly what he was doing.”

Evidently, Powley has a good sense of humour. When asked about getting into the mindset of this teenage girl, she says, “Well, I didn’t talk to anyone who’s slept with their mum’s boyfriend. I felt like those people are hard to come by.”

Skarsgard has been working non-stop since filming wrapped a year ago on True Blood.

“I miss my little True Blood family, and I’m glad of the way the story ended,” he says. “We worked together for seven years but I didn’t have much time to reflect on it because the night it wrapped I was on a plane to London to start shooting Tarzan.”

His ‘Jane’ is played by Margot Robbie, whom he was rumoured to be dating when they were both at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, though reports were never confirmed.

The actor who stands at 1.93m dated actress Kate Bosworth from 2009 to 2011 and began dating English model Alexa Chung in May this year. The photogenic couple has been seen holding hands in New York City, his newly adopted city.

“I lived in Los Angeles for seven years and I wanted to be in a city again. Having grown up in Stockholm, I missed that kind of lifestyle of not needing a car and you walk everywhere.”

He’s not the only Swedish actor making it big in the States recently. Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo franchise), Alicia Vikander (Man from U.N.C.L.E.) and more recently, Rebecca Ferguson (Mission Impossible — Rogue Nation) are all rising stars.

“I apologise,” he jokes, shrugging his impressively built shoulders. “There are only 10 million of us and a handful of us are working out here now. I’m very proud of them.”

We’re not sure if Alexander has a short memory, or the interview isn’t entirely accurate, but you wouldn’t think any guy could ever forget meeting this great lady……..
